Extended School Year
Extended school year(ESY)
services are services provided when school is
generally not in session. A student may need ESY during summer, winter, or
spring breaks to prevent the student from regressing and help him/her maintain
progress on IEP goals.
The following is the criteria that should be considered along with other factors
not listed to determine ESY placement.
-
Is significant regression expected if ESY services are not provided? The
school does not have to provide ESY services just because the student will
benefit from them. Instead, the IEP team must decide if the skills or
behavior will regress if services are not provided. Data should support this
decision, including how much regression the student experiences on weekends,
over Christmas or Spring break or when s/he was out for the summer in previous
years.
-
What is the nature and severity of the disability? Each student's needs must
be considered individually.
-
Are instructional areas or related services needed that are crucial in moving
the student toward self-sufficiency and independence? Particular
consideration for ESY services should be given to students who need
instruction in self-help skills such as dressing or eating, or who need
continued structure to develop behavioral control.
-
Did the IEP team use the following information and data to determine the need
for ESY services?
o Teacher
assessment of how the student responded to different instruction methods;
o Criterion-referenced
and standardized test data;
o Health
and health-related factors, including physical and social/emotional functioning;
o Past
educational history, as appropriate, including any ESY services;
o Direct
observation of the student's classroom performance;
o IEP
goals and objectives;
o Student
performance (pretest and post-test data);
o Behavior
checklists; and
o Parent
and student interviews where appropriate.
It
is important for the IEP Team to address the education needs of each student and
how these needs might be addressed.
