Grassland Middle School |

Helping students make a smooth transition to middle school is a major goal of monthly classroom guidance activities. Topics are addressed which invite student discussion and individual planning, such as goal setting, dealing with stress, time management, organizing for academic success, making good choices, internet and personal safety, and planning for seventh grade and the future. Group testing in sixth grade includes the IAI, a computerized test which evaluates math and reading skills and is administered through classroom groups twice yearly. |
|
Classroom counseling is an opportunity to bring to the student’s attention issues that are relevant to their social and emotional concerns. Some of the topics include setting goals, internet safety, study skills, and career exploration. Every month a new topic is presented. Students explore career interests by taking the Kuder Career Search with Person Match assessment online. |

Classroom Guidance |
|
A major focus of classroom guidance in the eighth grade is preparing students for a successful transition to high school. Students will take the EXPLORE test in October. The EXPLORE is a precursor to the ACT, a college-entrance exam that students will take in the eleventh grade. The test also includes an interest inventory that provides students with career areas to consider based on their interests. At the end of November, students attend a Career Fair that the county hosts for eighth grade students. Registration for Franklin High School will be in February or March. Course catalogs and other registration materials will be given to students to take home and discuss with parents. Each student will have a registration appointment scheduled for them to meet with his or her counselor from Franklin High School. Be on the lookout for more information in January 2009.
