Counseling Center

Grassland Middle School

Services Provided

Counselors meet with students for confidential individual counseling to address academic, personal, social, and career concerns. Parents and teachers may refer students, but many students come in on their own. By helping students to identify their own personal strengths, we work with students on learning how to make decisions, set goals, overcome obstacles, and cope with challenges.

Students may speak with a counselor during non-academic portions of the day. Students are welcome to drop by as needed. Weekly individual counseling sessions may also be set up for students.

Individual Counseling

We offer small group counseling on a variety of topics as needed. Groups have addressed study skills, friendship, stress and anxiety, transitioning to a new school, and family situations such as divorce and remarriage. Parents, teachers, and students should speak to a counselor to inquire about available groups. Small group counseling is also available through the STARS program at our school.

Small Group Counseling

Is your child having difficulty succeeding in the classroom? If so, the first thing to do is contact his or her teachers (their email addresses can be found via the Staff Directory link on the GMS homepage). It may be helpful to set up a conference with them to discuss concerns and talk about ways to address the problem. If your child continues to struggle, you should contact your child’s counselor to discuss your concerns and to see if a GEIT referral might be appropriate.

GEIT stands for General Education Intervention Team.  The GEIT is a multidisciplinary team designed to provide prompt, individualized support to students. Members of the team are the student’s parents, teachers, school counselor, school psychologist, and a principal. We collaborate to share ideas, develop interventions for the student, and connect resources with student needs.  The types of students who may be served by a GEIT include any student who is having difficulty achieving success in school and who is not already served by a special education IEP or a 504 Plan.  Contact your child’s counselor for more information.

GEIT Referrals

The school counseling program at GMS is a comprehensive, developmental program that supports the school’s mission to prepare students to be lifelong learners and responsible members of society.

In our proactive approach to meeting state school counseling and career guidance standards, we implement a classroom guidance curriculum, coordinate testing, and lead school-wide character education and anti-bullying efforts. The counselors are available to consult with parents and teachers to find ways to enhance student success. We are familiar with resources in the community and can make referrals upon request for parents to seek help and support outside of school for students. We also provide the responsive services listed below.
