School History
Woodland Middle School is located in historic Brentwood, Tennessee.  WMS opened in August of 1994 and grew to over 1000 students and 83 staff until Sunset Middle was built in 2004.  With current student zoning, WMS’ present population is 760.  Woodland Middle School is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Community
Woodland Middle School is a public school located in Brentwood, Tennessee, a suburban community just south of Nashville.  The student body consists of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders.  The school population is drawn from an area that extends from metropolitan Nashville through the east of the city of Brentwood.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Parent/Teacher Conferences are held in the fall and when called by a teacher or parent.

Parent Support Organization
Woodland Middle School has an active PTO that supports all aspects of student life.

Special Programs
Special Olympics; DARE; Brentwood Woman's Club Poetry Contest; Williamson County Medical Center Art Contest; Metro Interscholastic Mathematics Competition; Dukes University Talent Identification Program (TIPS).

Library/Media Center
The Library Media Center is open from 7:15 – 3:00 each school day.  Lindsey Anderson, the media specialist and Peggy Rein, the library assistant, provide access to the many resources that are available in the library media center.  The library collection of over 15,000 books, 600 audiovisual materials (cassette tapes, videos, and DVDs), 40 periodicals, 20 desktop computers, three carts of laptop computers on wheels (16 on each cart) and two laser printers gives students, faculty, parents and the community access to a wide variety of educational resources.  The use of the Internet through the WCS network system provides additional on-line periodicals, encyclopedias, and data bases. Scholastic Reading Counts is a flexible, literature-based reading motivation program that is used at WMS. A professional library with books and periodicals on current trends in education is available for the faculty. A parenting library with books pertinent to helping parents and adolescents through the teen years is housed in the library media center.

Warrior Readers Book Club
The Warrior Readers book club meets once a month and is an opportunity for students to participate in the Volunteer State Book Award program.  Students enjoy reading the books that are nominated for this award, discussing them and voting on their favorite VSBA book.  The book club is open to 6th, 7th and 8th grades.

Academics
The curriculum at Woodland Middle School includes a rich array of courses: Art; Band; Drama/Forensics, Language Arts/Reading; Computer Technology; ELL; Math; Music; Physical Education; Science; Social Studies and Spanish.

Tutoring
Tutoring is available before and after school.

Guidance
Two Guidance Counselors—Kim Ezell 7th grade & 6th grade Shawnee team and Michele Fuller 8th grade and 6th grade Cherokee & Choctaw teams—provide guidance services at Woodland Middle School.  Guidance counselors are available to provide a variety of services including: individual counseling; student placement; and consultation about testing. Students are encouraged to see their assigned counselor any time they have a problem, should they feel a counselor might be able to help them. Parents may also contact their child's guidance counselor to discuss any problems their child may be having in school.

Special Education Services
All special education students participate in Inclusion.  Three special education teachers and four teacher's aides support this department.  A full-time teacher addresses the needs of the certified gifted students each week.  A speech therapist, a physical therapist, and an occupational therapist work with those students who need them each week.  Woodland Middle School provides a range of services for every disability of students who attend in the school zone with the focus on participating in the general curriculum.

STARS
Students Taking A Right Stand (STARS) against Drug and Alcohol use is very active at WMS. The STARS counselor, Joyce Hollins, is available weekly for support groups and individual counseling on Monday afternoon, Tuesday and Friday.  Student Executive Committee (SEC) is composed of student leaders who work with the core team leader, Kim Ezell, to provide activities and conflict resolution with students.

Related Arts
Students participate in at least nine weeks of physical education during the school year.  Students also participate in Art, Computer Technology, Drama and Music.  Band is offered during the school day for all grades.  Performance Choir is available by audition for eighth grade.  Chorus is available for all grades throughout the year.

Athletics
Students may participate in Baseball, Basketball, Cheerleading, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, Track & Field, Volleyball and Wrestling.

Partnerships
We strongly believe in partnerships between businesses and school. Each of these organizations assists in keeping our school an enjoyable place to learn by donating time, contributions, gifts and even professional development for our faculty and staff.
