School History
Hunters Bend Elementary opened in 1995 with an enrollment of 319
students. A 10-classroom wing was added in 1998, and an outdoor science
classroom in 1999. The school building currently has 34 classrooms, a
multi-purpose gymnasium, cafeteria, and a spacious library. The school's
property is bordered on two sides by the historic Little Harpeth River.
Community
Hunters Bend serves students living primarily in Fieldstone Farms,
Monticello , Cheekwood, and Deerfield .
Before/After
School Care
The YMCA Fun Company provides before and after school child care.
Please contact Nikky Tenllado at 373-0215.
Parent Support
Organization
Hunters Bend Elementary is very proud to have an active Parent-Teacher
Organization. The Hunters Bend PTO is very supportive of the school in
numerous ways-especially helping to fund an exceptional computer lab,
nice playground, soccer goals, P.E. equipment and offering numerous
hours of volunteer work around the building. Many volunteers visit
Hunters Bend everyday to work with students and to help teachers. This
year’s PTO president is
Michelle Hayes.
Academics
We take pride in implementing the WCS curriculum. It is based on the
state standards and exposes our children to a variety of topics. Since
opening in 1995, HBES students have consistently tested in the top
percentiles in both the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program and
Terra Nova testing.
Special
Education Services
Currently, Hunters Bend has three full-time special education teachers and
9 full-time teacher assistants, a speech and language therapist, a
part-time gifted consultant, a part-time psychologist, and a part time
ELL teacher.
Special
Programs
Opportunities for personal growth are not limited to a seven-hour school
day. A wide range of physical and academic activities are available for
student participation after 3:35 P.M. The excellent facilities of
Hunters Bend are utilized by local scouting groups, Destination
Imagination problem-solving teams, basketball, and more. If music is
your interest, there is choir. Our PE department offers both a dance
troupe and jump rope team. In addition, our media specialist hosts a
book club and our writer’s club “Paws Prose.” Our
extra-curricular activities are scheduled for immediately before or
after school to save parents any extra trips to and from school. It is
our desire to expose our students to as many opportunities as possible
through the safe and secure environment of our school.
Guidance
Our students attend regularly scheduled guidance classes to learn how to
get along with friends, how to solve disagreements or arguments, and
other school-related problems. Topics are planned according to the
curriculum designed by the Williamson County Board of Education and
comply with both state and national standards. In addition, the school
counselor (guidance teacher) works with small groups, and individuals,
as special needs should arise for any of our students. Another resource
is evening parenting classes offered in conjunction with the STARS
program.
Library/Media
Center
The Media Center is becoming the "Window to the World" due to the
advancements of technology. Our school library offers classic
literature, research materials, current periodicals, newspapers, music,
videos, and cassettes for its patrons. Computer technology has enhanced
learning experiences by providing multimedia formats. The Hunters Bend
Media Center offers flexible scheduling for third, fourth, and fifth
grades in order to enhance classroom teacher and media specialist
cooperative technology integration into the curriculum. Teachers may
schedule blocks of time in the Media Center for research, multimedia
reports and presentations. Kindergarten, first, second, and third grades
have a structured 45-minute library time every week, in which librarian
Lori Bervoets teaches lessons that enhance the classroom academics.
Physical
Education
Physical Education is an extremely important aspect of growth and
development. Our students develop gross motor skills and learn to
participate as individuals and as team members. Mrs. Lisa Arnold and Mr.
Michael Burgoyne are certified, full-time physical education teachers
expose students to many types of activities for both cardio and muscle
strengthening. We also plan activities so all children experience
success as they improve their physical skills. Students also have the
opportunity to participate in a runners club, dance team and jump rope
team.
Music
The music classes at Hunters Bend, taught by Ms. Lisa Sparks focus on
exposing students to a variety of styles of music from folk to
classical. Each class works on developing their musical skills through
singing, playing, and listening to music. In addition, students have fun
learning about the performance side of music not only through audio and
video recordings, but also through interaction with various live
performing groups. We practice the importance of performance in music by
preparing and sharing various musical programs with our parents and
students throughout the school year.
Art
In art, National Standards and the Williamson County Art Curriculum
are covered. Art is built on the "Elements of Art": line, shape, color,
form, texture, space and value. The "Principles of Design": pattern,
movement, balance, rhythm, emphasis, unity and contrast. The younger
students concentrate more on the "Elements of Art" and the older
students expand on those and begin using the "Principles of Design" in
their art work. Students also study art from different cultures, time
periods and famous artists. Mrs. Claudia Duke strives to concentrate
more on the hands on experience of different art mediums rather than the
product produced.
Extra
Curricular Activities
After-school activities at HBES involve Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts,
Destination Imagination, choir (3rd, 4th, and 5th
grade), Junior Achievement Exchange City, Runners Club, Dance Troupe,
Jump Rope Club, Book Club, and Writer’s Club.
Site Based
Management
Hunters Bend Elementary was one of the first five schools receiving
Effective School Training and utilizing Site Based Management as well as
a Building Leadership Team. This has proven to be a very positive
management technique for Hunters Bend.
Feeder Schools
Students attend Hunters Bend for Kindergarten through Fifth Grade, and
then go to Grassland Middle School for Sixth through Eighth Grade. The
students then graduate to Franklin High School. Other elementary feeder
schools in the Franklin cluster are Walnut Grove and Grassland
Elementary Schools.
Partnerships
Hunters Bend Elementary strongly believes in partnerships between
businesses and school. We appreciate the Kroger store at Independence Square, and the
Publix store in Fieldstone Farms, Carrabba’s of Green Hills, and Sonic
on Hillsboro Road for their continuing support in many of our endeavors.
